Throughout our trip, we will be stopping at quite a few Points of interest where we will be filming and photographing as well as meeting local people. one of the landscapes i am most excited about is something i have wanted to go to for a year or two now, but up until now have had little excuse to go to Turkmenistan. The Mongol Rally presents a fairly unique opportunity to travel through Turkmenistan without the normal restrictions that go with the tourist visa (having a guide translator and strict itinerary).
The Door To Hell as it has become known, is a huge pit in the ground, which is 24/7 on fire. It is situated near the small town of Darvaz. The site was originally a mine, however, when drilling began, they found it was a huge cavern under the surface of the earth, filled with gas. in the fear that the gas may be harmful, they set the caver alight, and since then it has been burning, for more than 35 years. day and night. I intend to travel to Darvaz, and see the Door To Hell, and see if i can get some more information on the place from the locals. as the various blogs around the internet all seem to have limited information.
Soon our website is being updated to pinpoint the locations of points of interest on our travel map! also, there has been some developments to the route, and it looks as though Iran is the awnswer to our Caspian Sea problem.
